A robot renaissance in Bulgarian industry: 18 robots per 10,000 workers and what comes next

A robot renaissance in Bulgarian industry: 18 robots per 10,000 workers and what comes next

Bulgaria ranks last in the EU for the adoption of industrial robots. According to International Federation of Robotics (IFR) data for 2022, the country has about 18 robots per 10,000 employees, against a European average of about 106. Can that change, and what would need to happen?

Where Bulgaria stands globally

Region Robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees
Western Europe about 267
North America about 204
Asia about 131
Bulgaria (2022) about 18

The methodology behind the comparison is not entirely identical, but the gap is large enough for the direction to be clear.

Where robots are used in Bulgaria

According to a BluePoint survey, robots in Bulgaria are used mainly for packaging and labeling, food production, assembly, woodworking, welding and warehouse logistics.

What the industry is proposing

The Professional Association for Robotics, Automation and Innovation (PARAi) works to develop the sector. Its deputy chair, Yonko Chuklev, proposes several measures:

  • a co-investment model similar to INSAIT, where private companies and the state fund projects together;
  • tax relief for investment in automation;
  • robotization vouchers for entrepreneurs;
  • a legal framework for robotics, like the one South Korea has, for example;
  • test environments (sandboxes) for mobile robots and drones.

The eighth Robotics Strategy Forum brought together more than 50 exhibitors and close to 800 guests, which shows there is interest. Chuklev is a realist, though: Bulgaria lacks large mechanical and electrical engineering companies working in robotics, and in the near future humanoid robots have more potential in services than in manufacturing.

The digital side of automation

The robot on the factory floor is only the visible part. Around it there is planning software, data systems, customer portals and a website that explains to customers what the company can do. Manufacturers that automate often fall behind precisely on their digital presence.
