When custom development makes sense
For most WordPress tasks there is a ready-made plugin, and often it is the right choice. Custom development makes sense in three situations: when the existing option does not do quite what you need; when it does ten times more and slows the site down; and when the task is so specific that nothing ready-made exists.
Inside WordPress
The most common jobs are extra fields and content types, forms with conditional logic, calculators, store-specific rules and automations triggered by an event, such as a new order or a new enquiry. The code lives in a custom plugin or child theme so it survives updates, and it follows WordPress security best practice.
Outside WordPress
When the job is more of an application than a website, for example an internal tool with lots of interactivity, the choice is often React with Vite. Such an app can run on its own or connect to your site and other systems through API integrations.
