Core Web Vitals Optimisation: LCP, INP and CLS

Core Web Vitals are the three metrics Google uses to gauge how real visitors experience a page: how quickly the main content appears, how quickly it responds to input and whether things jump around while loading. This service is for sites where Search Console reports issues with LCP, INP or CLS.

Three performance gauges in the optimal zone

Core Web Vitals

  • Google Search Console
  • PageSpeed Insights
  • Lighthouse
  • Chrome DevTools
  • Chrome UX Report
  • WebP

01

What you get

  • Field data analysis

The Core Web Vitals report in Search Console and real-user data show which groups of pages have issues.

  • LCP: the main content

Getting the largest element on screen faster, usually a hero image or headline above the fold.

  • INP: responsiveness

Less heavy JavaScript, so menus, buttons and filters respond straight away to a tap or click.

  • CLS: a stable layout

Space reserved for images, banners and fonts, so content does not jump around while the page loads.

  • Validation in Search Console

Once fixes are in place, a fix validation is started in Search Console and the outcome is tracked.

02

Process

  1. Field data

Which metrics and which page groups fail the thresholds, on mobile and desktop.

  2. Lab testing

Reproducing the problem with Lighthouse and Chrome DevTools to pin down the exact cause.

  3. Template-level fixes

Fixes go into the templates, so every page of that type is fixed at once.

  4. Validation

Starting a fix validation in Search Console and monitoring until new visitor data comes in.

03

Why it matters

Technology

  • Google Search Console
  • PageSpeed Insights
  • Lighthouse
  • Chrome DevTools
  • Chrome UX Report
  • WebP
  • AVIF

A good fit for

  • Sites with "poor" URLs in the Core Web Vitals report
  • Pages with a large hero image or slider above the fold
  • Sites where menus and filters react sluggishly
  • Pages where content jumps around while loading
  • Online stores running lots of scripts and extensions
  • A better experience for visitors

Pages appear sooner, respond immediately and do not shift buttons from under your finger.

  • One of Google's signals

Core Web Vitals are among the page experience signals that Google takes into account.

  • Driven by real data

Decisions are based on data from real visitors, not just a single lab score.

What Core Web Vitals measure

Core Web Vitals are not a general speed score. They are three separate metrics, each with its own threshold. Google assesses them using data from real visitors, which is why a site that scores well in a lab test can still show problems in Search Console.

MetricWhat it measuresGood result
LCPWhen the largest element above the fold is displayed2.5 seconds or less
INPHow quickly the page responds to a click, tap or key press200 milliseconds or less
CLSHow much content shifts around while loading0.1 or less

LCP: the largest element

This is most often the hero image or slider at the top of the page. What helps: a lighter format such as WebP or AVIF, preloading that specific file and removing lazy loading from it, since lazy loading helps images further down the page but hurts the first one.

INP: responsiveness

INP replaced the older FID metric and measures the response to every interaction, not just the first. Problems usually stem from heavy JavaScript: page builders, sliders and third-party chat and analytics scripts. The fix is less code, loaded later.

CLS: stability

Content jumps when images have no set dimensions, when a cookie banner pushes content down, or when a web font swaps in after loading. The fixes are usually small, but they need to go into the templates.

How this differs from general speed optimisation

Speed optimisation makes the site faster overall. Core Web Vitals work is narrower: it starts from the specific issues in Search Console and ends with validating the fix there. The two often go hand in hand, and both support your SEO. If Search Console is flagging issues, send us your site address through the project inquiry form.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does PageSpeed Insights look fine while Search Console shows a problem?

A lab test is a single simulation, while Search Console uses data from real visitors on different devices and connections. The Search Console assessment is the one Google takes into account.

How long until Search Console shows an improvement?

Real-visitor data is collected over a rolling period of several weeks, so validating a fix is not instant.

What is INP and why did it replace FID?

INP measures how quickly a page responds to every interaction during a visit, whereas FID only looked at the first one. That gives a more accurate picture of responsiveness.

Do better Core Web Vitals improve Google rankings?

They are one of many signals Google uses. On their own they do not guarantee a higher ranking, but they improve the visitor experience and remove one obstacle.
